SWIM WAVES & RACE START TIMES:

The swim start will be wave starts in one-minute intervals. The Senior Division will start at 7 a.m. with approx. 8-10 kids starting a wave at a time. Waves will start with the eldest in each age group. Example - Senior boys ages 15 yrs will start first, followed girls ages 15 yrs, then boys 14, then girls 14 and so on. The Intermediate Division will start at 8:30 a.m. The Junior Division will start at 9:15 a.m.

SWIM COURSE AND WATER SAFETY:

Wetsuits are allowed and encouraged. We will have a large team of Lifeguards and Water Safety Marshals that will be both on the shore and in the water. Our in-water team will be on boards and/or kayaks, lining the swim course.

BIKE COURSE CAUTION:

The Tri Club San Diego bike course will be on roads closed to motor traffic. Each division will be on a different course. We will have volunteers and signs directing participants, however please make sure your child knows what division he/she is in, as we will be referring to the course based on division (Junior, Intermediate, Senior). Mile markers (large signs) will be along the course.

ORANGE FLAG ZONE!

There is a section of the bike course beside the transition area where the road has speed bumps.  This area is designated as a “ORANGE FLAG ZONE”.  The yellow flag zone rules are as follows:

  • No passing
  • Slow speed
  • Must be out of aero bars with hands covering the brakes

There will be volunteers waving ORANGE flags and yelling “Slow down!”.  Anyone breaking any of these rules will be disqualified.

The run course will be on roads closed to motor traffic, on paved walkway. Please make sure your child knows what division he/she is in, as we will be referring to division to help direct participants along the course. On the run course, the directional signs will be color-coded: yellow for Junior, orange for Intermediate and light blue for Senior.

TRANSITION:

Transition and bike check-in is ONLY ON RACE DAY. The transition will open to ALL age divisions at 5:30 a.m. (no early birds!) and will close at 6:45 a.m. Transition will re-open from  approximately 8:05 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. for the Intermediate division and from 8:45 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. for the Junior division  (transition will open to the Intermediate divisions only after the last racer in the Senior division gets off the bike and on to the run course (and likewise for the Junior division - after the Intermediate division).  Once transition closes, participants and parents must exit the transition and make their way to the swim start (which is very nearby). Parents are allowed in transition to help rack bikes and help set up transition area before the race (only). PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE TRANSITION DURING THE RACE. We will have volunteers in the transition to help kids find their way to their bikes and ensure participants have their helmets on before starting the race.

Bikes will be racked in designated areas that are identified by colors: Yellow for ages 6-8, orange for 9-11 and blue for 12-15.  These racks are numbered and color coded for easy spotting.  They are not numbered in conjunction with racers bib numbers.  We will allow 7 bikes per rack any where within the racers color division.  Be courteous and do not move bikes that have already in their place.  Placing is based on first come, first served.
